John Hughes’s Garden Problem

A gardener with a dislike of rectangular flower beds desires to sow seed evenly over a crescent formed by two intersecting circles (see diagram).

The wish is to be able to mark out equal areas within the bed, with a view to sowing equal amounts of seed in each such area.

It must be possible to do this with a tape measure and lengths of string or planks of wood, i.e. typical gardening equipment.
