A Christmas Hangover

The Christmas issue of New Scientist contained an article about building an overhanging wall of bricks.

It seems that the problem received attention in nineteenth century and then lapsed, after the optimum solution was found. However, recently a bit of lateral thinking has shown that the C19 estimate was only half of what can be achieved.

I thought that we might first try to reproduce the C19 result, and then go on to look at the more recent approach.
